On my way to and from work in Miami every day, I go through 25 lights on 4-mile stretch of road. Some are 200 yards apart. Most have red light cameras to issue fines. The timing of those lights is completely random, forcing my fellow commuters who are mostly solo SUV drivers to stop, wait, and accelerate repeatedly. The waste of fuel and pollution are as mindboggling as the waste of time. It would cost local city governments next to nothing to implement AI to time the lights and achieve tremendous benefit for both the environment and commuters. Unfortunately, the revenue from traffic fines and the lack of environmental awareness of local officials favor inaction. Strangely, even my fellow commuters do not seem to notice or care.
